How to Book a Cannabis-Friendly Hotel Room in Toronto
Most Toronto hotels are completely smoke-free. Here's how to find the few with designated smoking rooms, what to ask before you book, and the best alternatives.
If you search for a "420-friendly hotel in Toronto" you will mostly find disappointment. Almost every major hotel in the city is now 100% smoke-free, and smoking in a non-smoking room can mean a cleaning fee of several hundred dollars.
But legal options do exist. Under Ontario law, a hotel can designate some guest rooms as smoking rooms, and cannabis can be smoked in those rooms by registered guests and their invited guests. Here's how to find them.
Step 1: Start with hotels known to have smoking rooms
These Toronto hotels have been listed with smoking rooms in recent hotel guides. Availability changes, so treat this as a shortlist to check, not a guarantee.
- Filmores Hotel in the Garden District: budget, central, and listed with both smoking and non-smoking rooms.
- Holiday Inn Toronto – Yorkdale and Montecassino Hotel & Suites in North York: good for drivers and groups.
- Radisson Suite Hotel Toronto Airport: an all-suite option for your first or last night.

Step 2: Ask the right question before you book
A "smoking room" on a booking site almost always means tobacco. Before paying, send the hotel a short message. You can copy this one:
Hi, I'm booking for [dates]. Do you have designated smoking rooms available, and is cannabis permitted in them? I'd like to request one if so. Thank you.
Get the answer in writing (email or the booking site's message system). If the hotel says yes, mention it again at check-in.
Step 3: Know the alternatives
Edibles and beverages. Every hotel in the city is fine for these, because nothing is smoked. Legal edibles are capped at 10 mg of THC per package, so start low and wait up to two hours before taking more.
Outdoor spaces near your hotel. Ontario allows smoking cannabis on most sidewalks and in most parks. A short walk from a non-smoking hotel is perfectly legal. Our guide to where you can smoke in Toronto covers the details.
A private rental. For groups, a whole home where the owner allows smoking is often better value than two hotel rooms. Browse our luxury and party villas.
A real cannabis-friendly resort. If you can leave the city, Sir Sam's Inn & Spa in the Haliburton Highlands was announced in 2019 as Ontario's first openly cannabis-friendly resort, with smoking allowed on guest-room balconies and the grounds.
The bottom line
Smoking-room hotels in Toronto are rare but real. Shortlist from our list, confirm cannabis in writing, and keep edibles or a nearby park as your backup plan.
