Where Can You Smoke Weed in Toronto? A Visitor's Guide for 2026

Toronto has some of the most relaxed public consumption rules in Canada. Here is exactly where you can light up, where you can't, and the spots locals actually use.

Good news first: Toronto is one of the easiest big cities in the world to enjoy cannabis legally. Ontario treats smoking cannabis much like smoking tobacco, so if you could smoke a cigarette somewhere outdoors, you can usually smoke a joint there too.

The catch is the long list of places where you can't. Here is the short version, then the details.

The quick rules

  • Age: 19 or older to buy, carry or consume.
  • How much: up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or the equivalent) on you in public.
  • Where to buy: licensed stores or the Ontario Cannabis Store website. Licensed products carry an excise stamp.
  • Outdoors: allowed on most sidewalks and in most parks.
  • Indoors in public: never. That includes bars, clubs, restaurants and cafés.
  • Hotels: only in guest rooms the hotel has designated as smoking rooms.

Sidewalks and public outdoor spaces. Walking down Queen West or through Kensington Market with a joint is legal, as long as you are not near the places listed below. Be considerate: step aside from patio crowds, transit stops and doorways.

Most city parks. Trinity Bellwoods is the city's unofficial lawn party on warm weekends, and it hosted Toronto's legalization-day smoke-out in 2018.

For something calmer, take the 15-minute ferry to the Toronto Islands and head to Hanlan's Point for the sunset over the lake. Just don't light up on the ferry itself.

Your private rental. A private home or apartment is legal with the owner's permission, which makes a host-approved rental the best option for groups. Our luxury and party villa guide explains how to book one.

Designated hotel rooms. A small number of Toronto hotels keep designated smoking rooms. See our list of hotels with smoking rooms and always confirm cannabis is allowed before you book.

Where you can't smoke

  • Inside any enclosed public place or workplace, including bars, nightclubs, restaurants and cafés
  • On restaurant and bar patios
  • Within 20 metres of playgrounds, sports fields and community recreation facilities
  • On school grounds and hospital grounds
  • In any car or boat being driven, even as a passenger
  • In indoor common areas of condos and apartment buildings
  • In non-designated hotel rooms (expect a cleaning fee if you try)

Rule of thumb: if there's a roof and more than two walls, or children are playing nearby, don't light up.

Where to start your visit

Kensington Market is the spiritual home of Toronto cannabis culture. Hotbox Café has been the city's best-known cannabis spot for two decades and now operates alongside a licensed store.

For shopping downtown, The Hunny Pot on Queen Street West was Toronto's first legal storefront when it opened in April 2019. Use our nearest-shop map to find the closest store to your hotel.

Before you leave Toronto

Never take cannabis across the border, even if you are flying or driving to a place where it is legal. It is a serious offence in both directions. Finish it, gift it to a friend of legal age, or leave it behind.

Rules can change, and the City of Toronto can add its own bylaws, so check Ontario's official rules before your trip.
